Workshops & Classes

***Discover the traditional Japanese art of mizuhiki and learn how to tie knots using paper cords that symbolise friendship, love and happiness.*** At this workshop, held as part of Japanese Weekend at the Mucha Foundation Art Museum, participants will be introduced to mizuhiki, the traditional Japanese art of tying knots from special paper strands. They will have the chance to try their hand at transforming this simple material into a decorative knot. Behind mizuhiki knots lies, above all, an idea. A knot does not come undone of its own accord, and therefore symbolises the bond between people: a lifelong connection, friendship or love. It is said to bring the wearer good luck and protection from evil. A knot tied by hand is thus not only a beautiful object, but also a gift with a story. Under the guidance of an instructor, participants will learn the basic tying techniques and create their own piece to take home. No previous experience is required; all you need is patience and a willingness to try something new. The workshop forms part of a themed Japanese weekend. Throughout the weekend, the museum is hosting the ‘Language of Flowers’ exhibition, which brings contemporary Japanese ikebana art from the Sogetsu school to the Mucha Foundation Art Museum. The project’s leading figure is the Japanese master Hieda Shigyoku, who is travelling to Prague with her students to present ikebana through both the exhibition and live demonstrations. The project brings together Japanese aesthetics with Czech art, glassmaking and local plant material. Special glass vases are also being created for the exhibited compositions in collaboration with the Czech glassmaker Ondřej Novotný, with some of the arrangements featuring his original ‘Pastello’ collection. *The exhibition is taking place during the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Sogetsu School and also symbolically marks the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Prague and Kyoto.* The workshop is designed, amongst other things, for parents with children. Children under 10 are included in the price of their parent’s ticket. **Practical information:** - The workshop ticket also includes admission to the exhibition. - Date and time: 31 October 2026, 3.00 pm - Duration: 2 hours, including a guided tour of the exhibition - Capacity: 10 people - Price: 600,- - Language: Czech/English
